Happy Valentine's Day

Inn at Lake Joseph

Happy Valentine's Day to all--this year is kind of fun, because lots of people are celebrating this coming weekend by coming to the Inn for a romantic getaway.  Several of our friends in the area are hosting special celebrations you might enjoy.  Stacy at The Dancing Cat is hosting events this weekend, as well as on other nights, so take a look at their event calendar.  Brimstone Hill Vineyard is having its 14th annual Champagne & Chocolate event on Feb 18 and 19, 11:30 am - 5:30 pm.  It sounds like fun, too.  There are lots of other activities, like visiting artists on the Sullivan County Pottery Trail.  Although we're mostly booked for this weekend, we have a few rooms available for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday nights.  Check the website at http://www.lakejoseph.com/

Inn at Lake Joseph

We have a light dusting of snow on the ground this morning, and we're looking forward to our second annual Chocolate/Wine afternoon event today, and also next Saturday.  Since Valentine's Day falls on Tuesday, we're trying to celebrate with all the lovers who are visiting us during these two weekends.  (We'll do a little something on Valentine's Day, as well.)

BYW, one of our guests had to leave early today, so we have a room available for tonight--anyone interested, phone us at 845 791 9506.  I recommend phoning, as we'll rent it first come, first served.

Snowshoeing at Sam's Point

Inn at Lake Joseph

After a wonderful trip to Little Rock, Arkansas, to attend the Professional Innkeepers' annual conference, I continued on to California to visit my new grandbaby (and his parents and big sister).  So I'm back, refreshed and rejuvenated.

There's still no snow here (as of today), but our local ski area, Holiday Mountain, is making snow and offers skiing and snow tubing for your winter pleasure.  As for hiking, there are a number of good trails in the area, including the one right on our property.  Sam's Point, a preserve not too far from us, is having a snowshoeing day on Sunday, February 19, with snowshoes on loan if you sign up ahead of time, or you can bring your own.  Contact Heidi Wagner at hwagner@tnc.org to register.

Merry Christmas?

Inn at Lake Joseph
It’s with a great deal of sadness (not to mention some anger) that I mention this:  We've always decorated a Christmas tree at the Inn, and our guests have enjoyed its warmth and welcoming atmosphere.  This year, I added some pretty, gold-plated ornaments that are part of a collection that has a great deal of sentimental value for me.  I put 12 of these ornaments on the tree, and secured them with an extra wire so that they wouldn’t fall off—they looked really festive.  When we took the tree down today, we discovered that 5 of them had disappeared, apparently taken by visitors to the Inn over the holiday.   We found a couple of the wires still dangling from the branches.  I can’t imagine taking something that belongs to someone else, even in a place that's open to the public—I feel like my home has been violated.  If any of the persons who took those little ornaments would like to send them back, I would be very happy to receive them, no questions asked.  It might restore a little of my faith in humankind.

Time Flies

Inn at Lake Joseph
Time flies so fast--I can't believe I wrote the last post almost 2 months ago!  At the time, I was looking forward to our fall season, and today we're "enjoying" the October snow storm that suddenly hit this area.  I hear Eric shoveling our walks outside as I write.  Of course, we're expecting much nicer, sunny weather for the next few weeks, so come and visit us if you want to enjoy a little more fall.

I told you I'd let you know how the Elton John concert went--it was great.  He's quite a showman--very warm and connected to his audience.  I was impressed that he spent quite a bit of time at the end of the concert, before his final number, signing autographs for audience members who went up to the edge of the stage.  As many of you may know, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts pavillion holds about 4500 people under the roof, and about 10,000 on the lawn; and I think it was just about full.  The website will tell you what events are scheduled for the rest of the season--several concerts are planned in the Event Gallery, which is a beautiful indoor performance space.

I also mentioned wanting to attend one of the Saturday night suppers put on by Early Bird Cookery, and we did get to the last one of the season, held last week.  It was lots of fun--about 75 people were treated to a dinner of fresh, local foods, deliciously prepared and attractively served.  I also learned that the singular of 'ravioli' is 'raviolo'--did you know that?  We had a large 'raviolo' stuffed with butternut squash and dressed with a sage butter sauce that was outstanding.  I could have made the whole meal on those, but the roast duck accompanied by roasted root veggies that followed was not too shabby, either!

As for future events, we're signed up to attend "Wreath Fineries at the Wineries", put on by the Hudson Valley Shawangunk Wine Trail  .  This fun day involves starting a tour at one of the wineries on the Trail, where we'll receive a complementary glass for tasting, a wreath and an ornament to decorate the wreath.  Then at each winery we visit, we'll pick up another ornament to add to our wreath (and continue tasting, of course).  There are 3 of us going, with one of us as the designated driver--I won't tell you which one of us that is!

The Dancing Cat Saloon  is maintaining its high standards of entertainment going into the winter season.  Visit their website to see their event calendar.  Stacy Cohen, one of the proprietors, does her "Stacy & Friends" thing Thursday nights, and they've got a good line-up of performers on the weekends well in to next year.  And, their Catskill Distilling Company is available for parties, or for tours and tasting, as well.

Activities near the Inn

September is here, and there's lots to do here in the Sullivan County Catskills.  Farmers' markets abound with fresh, farm-to-market produce, and there's a website that I really enjoy visiting called Early Bird Cookery that sponsors local farm-to-table "Saturday night suppers."  There's a dinner coming up on September 24, and another on October 22.  The menus look wonderful, and I'm going to try to attend one soon.  Come and stay for a weekend with us, and get in on one of these delicious events.  Another great activity held at Bethel Woods is the Harvest Festival series that they sponsor on Sundays in the fall, starting September 4, from 11am to 4pm.  They showcase everything from wine to alpacas to handmade furniture on different Sundays.  This is a great time of year to visit Sullivan County--the days are usually warm and the evenings cool and crisp, and we'll soon be seeing the beautiful fall foliage that we're known for.

We're going to see Elton John tonight at Bethel Woods--I'll tell you all about it next time!
